Formed at the California School for the Deaf, Berkeley in 1960 by a small group of concerned teachers, Cal-ED (formerly CATHI) has grown into a large state-wide organization of professionals serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Its purpose is to improve the quality of education for all Deaf* children.


Membership Benefits:

  • Providing scholarships to future professionals in the field of deaf education through the Tamozelle Jennings Cal-ED Memorial Scholarships

  • Expressing to legislators and other decision-makers concerns related to Deaf* students

  • Receiving the e-News - the official publication of Cal-ED, published quarterly via email

Membership Dues:


  • Open to Credentialed teachers and professors in Deaf Education

  • Educational administrators supervising programs of Deaf students

  • Credentialed related service providers in Deaf Education

  • Certified Interpreters working with Deaf students


  • Open to Credentialed teachers in General and Special Education

  • Non-certified persons working in educational programs for Deaf students

    • (such as interpreters and instructional aides)

  • Families with Deaf children

  • Retired professionals and stakeholders

  • College Students



  • Open to Organizations involved in Education, Deaf Community, and Family Support

  • School Districts


  • Past Presidents who have completed their term(s) in good standing, shall hold professional membership for life without the need to pay additional dues

  • Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients


Note:  All membership dues are for a period of one (1) year and must be renewed annually in order to maintain a current membership status in Cal-ED.
