CAL-ED Awards

The CAL-ED conference is around the corner. The 2017 conference will be held in Pasadena, March 3rd-5th. 

The award criteria for each category is listed below. If you know or work with someone who you’d like to nominate, please submit the nomination form along with comments about the nominee by email to Patty Ivankovic by January 11, 2017 via email at CALEDPatty@gmail.com. The CAL-ED board will review all nominations and make the final decision on who will receive each award. If your nominee is selected, we ask that you be available to speak about the nominee at the upcoming conference.

CAL-ED Awards Criteria

At least two letters supporting this nomination from individuals with first hand knowledge of the achievements and work of the nominee will be required.  Recommendation letters from parents, students, program administrators, colleagues, and faculty at Deaf education programs should be included with each nomination  form.

Educational Interpreter Award

Required:

•    Current member of CAL-ED must nominate the individual
•    Continued commitment to improve skills as evidenced by attending workshops and interacting among the deaf community
•    Certification:
o    RID/NIC certified and/or
o   EIPA (Level 4 or above) and/or ESSE and/or
o    NAD Certified

Desired:
•    Mentors/supports colleagues in the field at their school site
•    Is a role model for other interpreters on the school site or within the district where he/she is employed (i.e. always willing to step up when help is needed, even when not part of their job assignment)   Examples would be:  willing to interpret for students needing to meet briefly during lunch, nutrition or after school with a coach, counselor, teacher, etc.
•    Upholds the interpreter’s Code of Ethics
•    Is a current member of CAL-ED

Contributor’s Award

Required:
•    Current member of CAL-ED must nominate this individual
•    Demonstrates a working relationship in some capacity with D/HH children and/or adults
•    Gives of his/her time unselfishly to promote the education of D/HH children and/or adults
•    Promotes the quality education of D/HH children and/or adults
•    Supports staff in the education of D/HH children and/or adults
•    Has worked or supported in the field of deafness for at least three (3) years


Administrator’s Award

Required:
•    Current member of CAL-ED must nominate the individual
•    Supports teachers and support staff with all parts of their job (i.e. parent concerns, student schedules or issues)
•    Demonstrates high skills for the job through interaction with staff, students and other administrators
•    Is sensitive to and current with D/HH issues and ADA laws

Desired:
•    Works with organizations outside of school site (i.e. programs desiring intern placement for their students); D/HH organizations, advisory committees, etc.)
•    Served in D/HH programs for a minimum of two (2) years
•    Is a current member of CAL-ED

Parent Award

Required:
•    Involved within their child’s school as a volunteer or other capacity
•    Participates in the education of D/HH children
•    Supports the school and attends workshops/conferences in regards to deaf education
•    Nominated by a current CAL-ED member

Desired:
•    Is a current member of CAL-ED or State/National Parent Organization
•    Advocates for D/HH children

Educator’s Award

Required:
•    Must be a current member of CAL-ED
•    Must be nominated by a member of CAL-ED
•    Current credentials in D/HH and subject area (if applicable)
•    At least four (4) years of experience as a teacher of D/HH students
•    Demonstrates excellence in teaching
•    Demonstrates leadership skills and commitment to community service
•    Awareness of and sensitivity to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community
•    Demonstrates continuing education in the field of deaf education
•    Willingness to go above and beyond

Among the criteria to be considered by the committee:

•    The ability to develop and implement innovative instructional activities
•    The ability to motivate and challenge students
•    Demonstrated student achievement goals
•    Demonstration of proficiency in subject areas and
•    Effective planning skills

Satisfaction of these criteria may be documented via nomination forms and recommendation letters from parents, students, program administrators, colleagues, and faculty at Deaf Education programs.

Life Time Achievement Award

(Nominated by the CAL-ED Board)

•    Is professionally affiliated with the field of Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
•    Has made a difference in the education for D/HH students locally or statewide
•    Can be a retired citizen (teacher, administrator, etc.)
