CAL-ED Grants

The CAL-ED Grant programs were established to award financial assistance to teachers with creative projects and workshops which will better the lives of Deaf and hard of hearing students and those professionals who work with them.  Recipients of Mini-grants and Workshop grants must be CAL-ED members in good standing and must provide an article with photos to the E-FORUM (and to the Web site) describing how the grant money was used and its benefit.

Upcoming application deadlines for Mini-grants and Workshop grants are as follows:

October 1st

January 1st

March 1st

February 2007 Workshop Grant

Mini-Grant Awards 2005

CAL-ED is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2004-2005 Mini-Grant awards!

October 2004

An award goes to Nancy Stanke of the Santa Clara Office of Education.

She proposed a project that involved making teacher-made kits to fit the California Math Standards and sending home with families to work on together with their DHH student.  She called this her "Home and School Connection" Program.  Children in kindergarten through second grade will enjoy using these kits!

Please see Nancy's article on how well received her kits are!

March 2005

An award goes to Helen Porter of the Fresno County Office of Education.

Helen and her colleagues put together a series of field trips for students on their itinerant caseloads to address geographic isolation as well as focus on math, science, language and agriculture.  We will look forward to the first installment of these interesting field trips!

March 2005

An award goes to Melanie Riecke of the Alhambra School District.

Melanie requested a camcorder for her class in order to address English, ASL and reading skills all in one little package!  Students love to act in front of a camera and tell a good story!  Read a future issue of CAL-ED's FORUM to hear all about Melanie's successful project!

YOU can win a Mini-Grant award, too!  Read the accompanying article below to find out how!  Once you've read all about CAL-ED's grants program, you may download the applications from "Useful Forms" page of this Web site.

Mini-Grants and Workshop Grant

CAL-ED supports its members through two different types of grants which awards teachers in the form of monies to support projects and programs they would otherwise not be able to do.  Although similar in award amount, the criteria for each are different.  Due to low numbers of applicants, it is hoped that an explanation of both grants and application and awards process will clear up any confusion.  Following is a brief guideline of each:

The Mini-Grant supports teachers who are trying to improve their program in which the DHH students are directly impacted.  The award amount is $500.00, and funds are to be used for materials purchased, rented, or to make.  Creativity is the key in this category as "the sky is the limit" as to what members can offer their students.  Past recipients' projects have ranged from integrated sign classes to great science and math projects!  Think about your particular students and how you can set up a project tailor-made to fit them!

Workshop Grants award members for setting up classes and workshops that allow professionals to grow in their field.  Workshop grant award amount is $700.00, and monies are to be used for registration fees, room rentals and other non-salaried items.  Projects can range from all-day symposiums on several subjects of interest or focus on skill-building work that can be applied to the classroom.

Basic guidelines to follow for both application processes are as follows:

Member(s) must be up-to-date on CAL-ED membership and in good standing at time of application

Monies are not to be used for salaries

A clear, concise description of project and how it will benefit student and/or professional directly must be included

Include a projected cost of entire project as well as breakdown of itemized costs

Application must be received by or on date of deadline or the application will become invalid

Recipients must be prepared to submit a "print-ready" article that describes the project and results (with pictures) to the editor of the FORUM and the Web Administrator of CAL-ED's Web site.

Review and Award Process

Applications are reviewed by a subcommittee within the CAL-ED Board.  All applications for a particular grant are gathered and reviewed.  Decisions are made collectively and membership status is verified by the Vice President of Membership.  Committee Chair then notifies applicants via a letter of application acceptance or denial.

The "Mini-Grant Application" is now available from the Web site by going to the "Useful Forms" page of this Web site!  The "Mini-Grant" Chair person is Grace Allan, CAL-ED's Area 4 Representative.  Please send all "Mini-Grant" applications to her at the address listed below:

Good luck in your endeavors to obtain a "Mini-Grant" from CAL-ED!

Don't forget!

If you are a successful applicant and are awarded a CAL-ED "Mini-Grant", please don't forget that one of your responsibilities as a grant recipient is to write and submit an article about the implementation of your grant -- complete with pictures -- that will be published in the E-FORUM and on CAL-ED's Web site!!

The deadline for submitting Workshop grant applications is now the same as for the Mini-grant applications!

The "Workshop Grant Application" will be available from the Web site within the next two (2) months.  Any "Workshop Grant" applications should be sent to Grace Allan, CAL-ED's Area 4 Representative, as she will be handling both kinds of CAL-ED grants!
